Black Interior Doors With White Trim Before & After

Painting black interior doors with white trim – before and after – can really refresh your doors and create a dramatic look.

As a non-expert this is a GREAT beginner project, too.

I had no idea what I was doing. I have never painted a door before.

Here Are My Black Interior Doors With White Trim Before & After:

That’s kind of embarrassing because the door before looks terrible. I had tried to clean it before but wiping it wipes the paint off so it’s just a mess. Obviously it looks sooo much better afterwards.

The Home Depot lady gave me great tips which were:

  • Just wipe down the door if it’s dirty, no need to sand it.
  • Paint with the small brush the grooved areas of the doors, first (if you have them).
  • Just paint… you can’t really mess it up.

Tips I learned as I went:

  • Tape off the doorknob (I feel like this is obvious but just in case lol).
  • Paint inside the door black if it’s going to open out and leave it white if it opens in and the other side of the door will remain white.

Best Black Paint Color for Interior Doors

This is really your preference of course. I’m the grab a color and go kind of girl so I don’t have many tips for you here. I just think black is black but I could be oh so wrong (let me know if so)!

Honestly I did actually pick a dark grey but it looks entirely black to me.

Tools to Paint Your Doors Black

Really these are the tools to paint your doors black or any color. Here’s what I used and what the lady at Home Depot (my best friend for advice haha) told me I was good to go with:

  • Small Roller and Tray Kit.
  • Black Paint.
  • Small Angled Brush (if you have paneled doors).
  • Drop Cloth.
  • Wipes.

I like the small tray and roller. Really easy to work with.

My black paint was from Home Depot.

I used the wipes to wipe paint that dripped or got somewhere that I didn’t want it. Worked really well.

How to Paint a Panel Door Black

In my research I found a much more professional instruction post from Pretty Handy Girl HERE. If you want MUCH better and detailed instructions I will definitely lead you there.

I’m more of a “let’s do this quick and see what happens” kind of girl lol! I know, I know… I’m gonna work on my attention to detail I promise.

So to paint the panel door all I did was paint the panels first with a brush and then use the roller to cover the rest of the door.

After I had all that gone over once I kept going back over the whole door anywhere that I noticed the white was showing through. I kept doing this and was very happy with the results.
